LA PLACE, La., Nov. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to notification of a lawsuit received from the United States Public Interest Research Group, Bayou Steel Corporation (AMEX: BYX), today issued the following statement:
"Bayou Steel Corporation has received the formal letter of notice from the United States Public Interest Research Group indicating that several environmental groups and others intend to sue Bayou Steel for alleged violations of the Clean Air Act. One of the claimants named, Chris Jouty, is known to be a member of Local #9121 of the United Steelworkers of America who has been on strike against Bayou Steel since March 21, 1993. Bayou Steel believes that this latest threatened lawsuit is yet another spurious attempt in the Steelworker's carefully orchestrated campaign to force Bayou Steel to make concessions in a union dispute. Repeated regulatory investigations insisted upon by the union have failed to reveal significant noncompliance with any air law. If sued, Bayou Steel will vigorously challenge any such action and ultimately will prevail," said Lynn Bergeson, an attorney of the Washington, D.C.-based law firm of Weinberg, Bergeson, and Neuman.
Al Pulliam, manager, Environment, Health & Safety at Bayou Steel added that "the allegations contained in the notice are similar in nature to allegations made in the past by the union -- the results of which are already a matter of public record. Bayou Steel will give this matter a full evaluation."
The USWA has been on strike against Bayou Steel Corporation's mini- mill in Louisiana since March 1993. In August 1995, Bayou Steel filed a lawsuit in federal court in Delaware under the Racketeer Influenced Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) to seek relief from harassment from the USWA and related parties.
