Fed: Experimental sleep drug turns off happy hormone
A new sleeping pill designed to help insomniacs stay asleep .. will be trialled on Australians.
The experimental drug targets the so-called happy hormone .. serotonin .. to promote
more shut-eye among among troubled sleepers who fall asleep easily .. but wake long before
dawn.
The international trial is being led by French pharmaceutical company Sanofi-Aventis
.. maker of the controversial drug Stilnox .. which was recently linked to bizarre sleep
behaviour like binge-eating and driving.
Under the trial .. sleep maintenance insomniacs will be given either the drug or a
placebo to compare results.
It'll involve 18 hundred people from Australia .. Europe .. the Americas .. Asia and
South Africa.
